Luc Thorel obtained his Engineering Degree in Geotechnics and Geophysics in 1987, a diploma delivered by Polytech’Sorbonne, Pierre & Marie Curie University.
He received his PhD in geotechnical engineering, delivered by Ecole des Ponts ParisTech in 1994 for research on Plasticity and damage of ductile rocks : application to rocksalt.
He was research engineer successively both in Lausanne Swiss Federal Institute (1988-1990), working on frost behaviour of soils, and in Ecole Polytechnique (1994-1996), working on mechanical behaviour of clays in the framework of underground storage.
In 1996 he moved to Nantes' Campus of the University Gustave Eiffel (Formerly French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks IFSTTAR, formerly French Public Work Institute - LCPC) to work on physical modelling as a researcher in the Geotechnical Centrifuge team. In 1999 he was appointed as the head of the LCPC’s Physical Modelling in Geotechnics group.
In 2010 he passed the Accreditation to supervise Research in Civil Engineering & Geotechnics, delivered by Nantes University and became Director of Research in IFSTTAR-LCPC.
In 2013 he was appointed as the Director of the Geomaterials and Modelling in Geotechnics Laboratory, in University Gustave Eiffel’s Nantes campus, and in 2021 deputy head of the Centrifuges for Geotechnics Laboratory. Since 2022 he is Assistant Director for Geotechnics of the Geotechnical Engineering, Environment, Natural hazards and Earth sciences Department (GERS) at Univ. Gustave Eiffel.
He was elected member of the technical committee of the French Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in 2006, and became vice-president between 2009 and 2012. In 2012, he was elected member of the Conseil of the CFMS and became vice-president in 2016 for 4 years. Since 2010, he represents the French Geotechnical Society in the International Technical Committee “Physical Modelling in Geotechnics” TC104, and became vice-chair by the end of 2022. He has been also member, from 2014 to 2020, of the editorial board of the Int. Journal Physical Modelling in Geotechnics, and is member of the editorial board of the Transportation Geotechnics Journal since 2021.
Luc Thorel's current research explores themes concerned with physical modelling in geotechnics, particularly with the geotechnical centrifuge. He is working mainly on soil-structure interactions under complex loading, such as soil reinforcement, deep and shallow foundations but also on water migration in soil (including soil-atmosphere interactions or erosion) or vibration mitigation. Recent applications are orientated towards Renewable Marine Energy foundation and anchoring systems. The ongoing challenge for each of these topics is to observe and understand the phenomena, and also to obtain appropriate experimental data to be compared to numerical or theoretical models.
He coordinates research programmes such as the French National ASIRI+ (2019-2023), devoted to soil reinforcement with vertical rigid inclusions.
Luc Thorel is appointed for teaching geotechnics, foundations and physical modelling in geotechnics in several universities and "Ecoles d'Ingénieur", such as Nantes University, Centrale Nantes, Sorbonne University and University Grenoble Alpes.
He has published 70 publications in journals, 189 communications in conferences, 87 research reports for industry. He co-supervised 18 Ph.D students, and was member of 51 PhD jury, including 22 times as a reporter. He has been regularly asked for reviewing papers for the main geotechnical engineering journals. He has been and is still involved in Regional, National, European and International Research programmes or collaborations, as well as in Industry research activities.

Le comportement des sols compressibles renfocés par inclusions rigides verticales, s'il est bien abordé sous charge répartie verticale nécessite d'être approfondi pour certaines autres configurations : semelle, charge inclinée, excentrée, roulante, dynamique, sismique..
L’étude de faisabilité du PN ASIRI+ a mis en évidence un besoin de mener des actions de recherche pour différentes applications du renforcement des sols par inclusions rigides. Ainsi, le programme de recherche a été élaboré autours de trois principaux axes : • Axe 1 : l’étude des plateformes de transfert de charge, • Axe 2 : le comportement des ouvrages sous sollicitations quasi-statiques et/ou inclinées, • Axe 3 : le comportement des ouvrages sous sollicitations dynamique et sismiques.
Plusieurs thèmes seront abordés au travers de 9 tâches : • Tâche 1 : Etude des mécanismes développés dans la plateforme de transfert de charge – Approche expérimentale, • Tâche 2 : Instrumentation d’ouvrages réels, • Tâche 3 : Essais en laboratoire pour étudier la position des renforcements sous les remblais de faible épaisseur avec prise en compte du trafic, • Tâche 4 : Semelles sur inclusions rigides, • Tâche 5 : Eolienne sur inclusions rigides, • Tâche 6 : Comportement du massif de sol renforcé par inclusions rigides sous sollicitations dynamiques, • Tâche 7 : Comportement du massif de sol renforcé par inclusions rigides sous sollicitations sismiques, • Tâche 8 : Modélisation numérique, • Tâche 9 : Valorisation et transfert vers la pratique. Une tâche transversale (tâche 10) concernant l’étude de l’impact environnemental de la technique de renforcement de sol par inclusions rigides sera développée. Enfin la dernière tâche (Tâche 11) concernera le pilotage de ce projet.

Le renforcement des sols compressibles par inclusions rigides verticales modifie le comportement global de l'ouvrage géotechnique (remblai, dallage ) ainsi supporté. Comment de propagent les ondes de surface? Comment se comporte l'ouvrage sous sollicitations sismiques?
La technique de renforcement des sols compressibles par Inclusions Rigides (IR) verticales est aujourd’hui très répandue en France et à l’étranger. Cette technique de fondation composite mêlant des éléments profonds et superficiels, a été initialement développée pour des ouvrages de type remblai (pour des infrastructures de transport), mais s’étend aujourd’hui aux éoliennes et aussi aux bâtiments industriels (type plateformes logistiques), de logements ou bureaux (moins de 4-5 étages), écoles, hôpitaux, etc. Elle s’insère ainsi sur tout le territoire, urbi et orbi, impacte le choix des fondations des constructions et des ouvrages linéaires de transport (routes et voies ferrées), touchant ainsi de façon peu visible, mais réelle, les citoyens dans leur cadre de vie et pour leur mobilité.
Deux aspects particuliers du comportement du massif de sol renforcé par inclusions rigides sont abordés dans le volet ANR du Projet ASIRI+ (un volet PN est développé en parallèle) :
- sous sollicitations dynamiques: Modification de la vitesse de propagation des ondes surface dans un milieu à inclusions périodiques
- sous sollicitations sismiques : Effets inertiel et Cinématique
Dans ces deux cas, des équipements expérimentaux remarquables seront utilisés (banc de Mesure Ultrasonore Sans Contact MUSC et Centrifugeuse Géotechnique équipée du Simulateur de Séismes), dont les résultats seront comparés à des simulations numériques.
