My research focuses on how subsurface properties influence earthquake ground motions, with the aim of improving ground-motion prediction and seismic hazard assessment. I combine seismic recordings and numerical simulations to investigate wave propagation and changes in material properties, from individual rock samples to sedimentary basins.

Site effects and nonlinear soil behaviour

Near-surface layers modify the amplitude and frequency content of earthquake ground motions. During strong shaking, soils can exhibit nonlinear behaviour, reflected in a decrease in their resonance frequencies. I develop time–frequency analysis methods to identify these frequencies and track their evolution with shaking intensity, using surface recordings without requiring a reference station. Applied to 567 stations of the KiK-net network in Japan, time–frequency resonance analysis (TFRA) reveals substantial variability in nonlinear response across sites, highlighting the importance of local geological conditions.

In southeastern Türkiye, I combine TFRA with a complementary method, stacked Stockwell power spectral density (sS-PSD), to characterize linear and nonlinear site responses over a broad frequency range. These studies show that different resonance frequencies at the same site can respond differently to increasing shaking intensity. In the dataset analysed, an average frequency decrease of approximately 10% is observed at a peak ground acceleration of around 70 cm/s². These findings help characterize the onset of soil nonlinearity and account for the diversity of local site responses in seismic hazard assessment.

Three-dimensional ground-motion simulation and site–city interactions

I use three-dimensional numerical simulations to investigate how complex geological structures influence seismic wave propagation. My work focuses on basin effects and on comparing simulations with methods that estimate site amplification using simplified subsurface indicators.

I am also developing research on site–city interactions through numerical simulations, investigating how the built environment can modify seismic wave propagation and ground motions.

Seismic imaging and rock deformation

I investigate changes in the elastic properties of rocks during deformation. Using laboratory experiments and waveform inversion, I study how seismic signals can reveal the evolution of damage and internal material properties.
